Rest, Recover, Reconcile: Why Deep Sleep is Non-Negotiable

Dec 10th, 2024 by Dr. Emily D'Adamo

The holidays offer many opportunities to spend time with our communities and connect with shared traditions. They can, however, certainly disrupt our sleep quality as we pack our calendars, eat later into the evening, and stay up late to ring in the New Year.

Here at D’Adamo Personalized Nutrition, we’re highlighting Mind Body Support all December long to support you and your family during this festive time. Our second product highlight is Tranquility Base, a Right-4-All-Types herbal formula that aims to improve sleep onset, quality, and duration.

Sleep is a nonnegotiable function in human physiology as it offers the body the opportunity to repair and replenish. When we sleep, our body’s systems enter an anabolic state allowing the immune, nervous, and musculoskeletal system to recover while formulating and maintaining mood, memory, and cognition.

anabolic a-nə-ˈbä-lik: marked by or promoting metabolic activity concerned with the biosynthesis of complex molecules

Many of us are familiar with the acute effects of a poor night's sleep - we often feel hazy, sluggish, and less mentally sharp in the following days. We may find our appetite increases, as we reach for external sources of energy in food.

Over time, a cumulative sleep deficit can pose a threat to one’s cognitive, metabolic, and emotional wellbeing.

Tranquility Base offers a gentle sleep support that can be taken nightly, composed of four synergistic ingredients.

  • L-Theanine. L-Theanine is the major amino acid found in green tea and appears to be a relaxant that increases alpha-waves, producing mental and physical relaxation while decreasing stress and anxiety, without inducing drowsiness.
  • GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid). GABA in the central nervous system, is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. GABA exerts a calming effect at the cellular level.
  • Lemon balm (from Melissa officinalis). Clinical research suggests that lemon balm seems to have stress-relieving effects.
  • Chamomile Leaf Standardized Extract. Is a well-known traditional medicinal herb shown to produce a feeling of relaxation.

Tranquility Base was specially formulated by Dr. Peter D’Adamo to support alpha, theta, and delta waves, all seen in the different stages of sleep. Each waveform maintains a different frequency and amplitude.

  • Alpha waves are seen when a person is in a resting state, but is still fully conscious. Their eyes may be closed and all of their body is resting and relatively still, where the body is starting to slow down.
  • Theta waves occur during the period of a person being awake, and they continue to transition into Stage 1 of sleep and in stage 2.
  • Delta waves are seen in stages 3 and 4 of sleep when a person is in their deepest of sleep.

These waves rise and fall throughout the duration of sleep, allowing the body to rebuild and regenerate so you’re ready for the next day.

Tranquility Base supports your ability to ride the wave allowing you to access restful sleep. It’s also great for supporting the body during higher daytime stress.
